Neurosurgery Simulations on GPU with Haptic Feedback

Simulation of surgical operations by computer offers a relevant solution to the lack of training in providing an environment to learn the necessary actions for a procedure without the risks of a real operation. The simulation occupies a more and more prominent place in the formation of students. However, the soft tissue simulation is using at this point a non-physical approach based on rendering techniques, and the results are too often unrealistic, while interactions with surgical tools during the handling of fibrous tissues often lack precision.

Some physical equations can be solved on GPU, but one has to integrate ultra-fast digital resolution, haptic feedback and virtual reality in a realistic environment for various surgeries. In order to improve the shortcomings of existing simulators and increase their realism, this research project aims to develop an engine governed by proper physical laws that will allow the simulation of soft body deformation as well than resection of pathological organs or tissues.
