The compositing artist assembles and blends several image layers (2D and 3D elements, particles, light layers, animated characters) to compose a complete shot that can be used in the final cut. This is a key step in VFX and allows the final results of a shot to be visualized. A shot is made up of many layers. Compositors must also verify the colour levels of each shot.
